What is NDIS?

What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government initiative designed to provide funding and support to Australians with a permanent and significant disability. It empowers individuals to live more independently, achieve their goals, and participate actively in their communities.

NDIS is flexible and person-centred, meaning the support you receive is tailored to your unique needs and aspirations. Whether it’s assistance with daily tasks, therapies, or access to community activities, NDIS helps participants build skills, improve their quality of life, and achieve greater independence.

Who is Eligible for NDIS?

To access NDIS, you must:
– Be under 65 years of age when you apply.
– Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
– Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to perform daily activities.

NDIS also supports early intervention for individuals whose functional capacity could improve with timely support.

How Does NDIS Work?

NDIS is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Once you’re approved as a participant, you’ll work with the NDIA to create a personalised NDIS plan. This plan outlines your goals and the supports you need. You can choose how to manage your funding

NDIA-managed

The NDIA pays providers directly

Self-managed

You control your funding and pay providers yourself.

Plan-managed

A plan manager helps you manage your funding and payments.

What Does NDIS Cover?

Personal Care

Personal care and assistance with daily activities.

Household Tasks

Household tasks like cleaning, laundry, and meal preparation.

Therapies

Access to therapies such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and counselling.

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology like wheelchairs, hearing aids, or communication devices.

Community Participation

Support for community participation, social activities, and skill development.

Transport

Transport to help participants access appointments, work, or community events.

Each participant’s funding is tailored to their specific goals and needs, ensuring they receive the right support.
